What is Act2Aid?Act2Aid is a small but enthusiastic student group, dedicated to raising money for charity. We use a number of different methods to raise money – all kinds of fundraisers, and we rely heavily on donations as well. A huge thank you goes to all those who are already donating. We always appreciate any kind of help, either practical or financial. If you would like to help, we meet every Thursday lunchtime in Room 43. |

| What are we doing now? Act2Aid June 2010 The school year is drawing to a close, but this month we held one last fundraiser, our cocktail sale, and did amazingly well – we managed to raise €200 through not only sales, but also generous donations – thank you all so much! This left us with a budget of €1500 to donate to various deserving projects. Last week we held what we like to term a budget meeting, and split the money between 5 different charities; some old ones that we’ve had contact with before and also a couple of new ones that we haven’t. €300 was put aside for next year, so that we can sponsor our sponsor child, Edgar Lopez Meija again, by paying for his education and by helping his village to get vital necessities like water wells and medical support. €400 went to Hands up for Kids. This is a project which tries to educate poor children in Kenya. We have had contact with them before and they continued to keep in touch, even giving us a very detailed account of what they did with our donation, so when they got in touch again, saying that they wanted to put Internet connection into one of their Primary Schools on Lamu Island, we felt that we could only do the right thing and donate to them again. We have already received a thank you email from their administration and hopefully we’ll hear from them with news of what they have done with the new money soon. €400 went to a schools project in Ethiopia, which is another project that we have already given money to in the past, and had positive responses from, so we hope to keep in touch with them and possibly establish a more lasting connection at some point in the future. €150 went to Interplast, a project started by Doctors Without Borders which travels to Third World countries and helps people there who are disadvantaged because they have a cleft lip or some other physical disability such as burns through the use of plastic surgery. €150 went to support a project in Addis Abeba which helps women and children living on the streets by educating and feeding the children and teaching the women to sew so that they will be able to support themselves in the future. The last €100 was given to a project here in Holland, Stichting 't Ros Beyeart, which provides riding lessons for children and adults with both mental and physical handicaps. Warning: The Interplast site has some pretty graphic images, so if you’re particularly sensitive, it may be better to give that one a miss. http://www.schoolprojectethiopie.nl http://www.acede-ouest.org and http://www.acede-ouest.org/downloads/triptyque_anglais.pdf All in all, it’s been a very successful last few weeks of the school year, and we are thrilled about that, but at the same time, things are also turning bittersweet for us in our little group, because we’re going to have to say goodbye to three of our members – Isa and Jasmine Leppaviita, who are moving to Sweden in the summer, and Cindi Smit from S7E, who, if all goes well, will be off to University in the autumn. They will be sorely missed and we’d just like to say a very big thank you to all of them. It’s been both an honour and a pleasure to work with them, and we wish them the very best of luck with everything they undertake in the future. The biggest thank you of all, however, goes to all of you, our loyal supporters, who always donate and make all our work possible. Thank you all so much and have a very happy summer holiday! We’ll be back in September with new members, new ideas and new projects. In the meantime, remember: Your Money makes a difference!
March 2010 This month, our efforts have been dedicated mainly to fundraising. Thanks to your help, we have been extremely successful. Shortly after the Musical performances on 9, 10, 11 March, we sold CDs with picture stills from the performances and final rehearsal. On the last Thursday of term before the Easter Break, March 25, we held an Easter Bake Sale, which Mrs. Booyens, Mrs. Helder and Mrs. Cooper were also kind enough to bake for. This means that our grand total this month is €320, which we will use to sponsor our sponsor child Edgar and various other projects, such as Heart for Haiti, from whom we recently received an email thanking us for January’s donation. Remember – if you have any ideas as to projects that we could support, then please don’t hesitate to contact one of us. Your Money Makes a Difference!
February 2010 We also recently received a letter from our Sponsor Child, Edgan Lopez Meija, which will go up on our notice board shortly. Remember: Your Money makes a difference! January 2010 Thanks to your help, we recently made € 160 off our Santa Hat sales, which we have already donated to the Charity that Live Aid supported this year, Ubihapi, to help finance the building of a new school for poor children in Lahore in Pakistan. We are also selling CDs with about 80 photographs of this year’s Live Aid on them. They’re great things to have as memories and they’re only € 2 each, so if you’d like to order one, please get in touch with one of us as soon as possible. Given the recent earthquake in Haiti, we have decided to donate €650 to help relief efforts there. Of course, it doesn’t stop there! We’re constantly thinking of new ideas as to what to do with our money and with your continued support, we can sponsor even more organisations in even more countries. Your Money makes a difference! |
