Introduction
Careers guidance is provided throughout the
school by members of staff appointed by the Head teacher to each
language section. This member of staff is responsible for delivering
the careers programme to the pupils in that language section. There are
at present two key areas of responsibility - the timetabled 5th, 6th
and 7th year programmes, and the non timetabled higher education
service.
The 5th year programme consists of 3 separate
sessions: self assessment and decision making skills, first step in
higher education, and option choices. These sessions take place in the
first semester so that pupils can make their baccalaureate choices
around Easter time. There is also a Parents evening organised to
coincide with the option session. The 6th year programme focuses on
higher education and organisation of the Baccalaureate, the 7th year
programme on higher education, job trends, applications and cv for
university. For each of them 8 periods are spent.
Each careers teacher is responsible for
advising pupils about opportunities within their own country as well as
making sure that those pupils intending to study elsewhere know who
they must contact. All this is done in lunchtimes, free lessons etc. In
addition, the teacher assists the pupils in the application procedure.
There are option choices to be made in other years and it is the
responsibility of the careers teachers to advise and help pupils,
particularly those in year 3.
Much of the work of the careers teacher is
done with the assistance of class teachers and subject teachers. Some
language sections, notably the English and German, benefit from regular
visits by a national careers advisor who provides up to the minute
information as well as advising individuals through interviews and
group sessions.
There is a
careers library in school, shared with the counselling team. The
careers teacher from each section maintains the information in the
library. There is a small budget for resources and internet access is
available in the room.
